Cougars fall to Oly, 31-7

The only good thing about a 31-7 game is that the loss stings less than a 21-20 heartbreaker. After the first Capital touchdown in the early minutes, Olympia dominated on both sides of the ball, controlling the pace of the game while making absolutely zero mistakes.

The game looked like it was going to be tight early on. Capital stuffed the Bears' first drive. Oly's defense stood up, forcing a three-and-out and blocking a punt deep in Cougar territory, but Capital held the Bears to a field goal, 7-3.

Two crucial plays shifted the momentum Olympia's way. One was a dropped interception by Riley Wall that could have stopped the Bears' early comeback. The other was a brilliant fake punt call on fourth-and-long close to midfield. The resulting run set up an eventual 24-7 lead, and Capital would never seriously threaten again.

Gotta hand this one to Bill Beattie for perfect play-calling and disciplined execution by a Bears squad that looked hungry to avenge its earlier loss to 2A Tumwater.

So much for my optimism. At least it was non-league.

Added: And it least it was closer than last year.

Bill Beattie is still coaching there? I remember when he was Elma's coach.

This'll make you feel old: he's been coaching there for 13 years. (He's also half-time Athletic Director this year.)
