those woeful Mariners

It's been that kind of season so far... brilliant victories largely overshadowed by soul-crushing losses. Today, more of the same: Jamie Moyer's fabulous effort blown by a balk in the fifth. Mariners lose, 1-0.

Losing 1-0 on a balk is almost unheard of--a tragic rarity. It requires new metaphors, new analogies to be comprehended. It's falling up stairs. Rolling a gutter ball while bumper bowling. Tripping and landing on a bee's nest. Being dumped by a pity date. Breaking a piano string. Lying encased in a body cast, in a hospital bed, unable to reach the remote with nothing but the Home Shopping Network for entertainment. Cat-sitting.

I'm sure you can think of other, better images. I have to stop. It aches.

That's pretty damn sad.

I'm with you, though. I'm a Padres fan by unfortunate birthright.
