advise and declaim

My wife reports that "Christian" evangelists were demonstrating in Red Square today, holding their usual assortment of banners and signs, and enduring heckling and physical confrontations from students. On orientation day, no less.

To the evangelists who regularly visit Evergreen: Give up already. No one is converted by your actions, no one is persuaded by your signage. We suspect you're linked to Fred Phelps, even though you've taken down the "GOD HATES FAGS" signs you used to carry. Your martyr card expired years ago.

To the students of the Evergreen State College who verbally and physically abused the demonstrators: Way to go. Way to show your tolerance, your commitment to freedom of expression. Way to confirm how social justice and peace will trump bigotry and oppression. Way to prove to the heckled that their actions are righteous. Way to impress those incoming freshmen with your stupid antics.

Heh. Ask your wife to pick up a copy of the CPJ and look on the back cover. The picture is pretty mean.

I don't think it's uncharitable to simply express my faith that deep in their heart of hearts, those evangelists know Jesus thinks they're doodoo heads. He would not tell them to go f--k themselves per se, but that is the slippery slope down which they're headed. Or so it is written.

Sorry: I meant to say the Tooth Fairy, not Jesus. I don't know what Jesus would do.
