After hashing out nearly every discrepancy between what the district wanted and the union demanded, only one sticking point remained: compensation.
The district offered an extra 14 hours of staff development. Teachers would have to attend special classes in order to get remuneration. The union said no, and offered a compromise: 6 hours of staff development, and 9 hours of "optional day" time, money for work already done outside of school. (Two hours per day for the average teacher.) A raise. A real raise.
The district wouldn't budge. After a brief meeting this afternoon, union members present unanimously voted "no" again.
On to mediation.
And that was how I spent my afternoon.
