"Stalker" is an unfortunate choice of word. Apparently the target was flattered, and seemingly these were all or mostly solitary overtures without follow-up. You can't even prosecute a charge of "traveling" in basketball on the basis of just one step.
Oh, I can tell how attractive you were at 13. "Stalker" appears in the the subhead of the article you linked: "A spelling bee brings out the stalkers." My rath was for whatever reporter or copyeditor committed the original sin.
