The team, led by Ettore Zuccato, used mass spectrometry to compare ratios of cocaine and its breakdown product, benzoylecgonine, which are excreted in human urine. They say at least 160,000 25-milligram "lines" of the drug are snorted each day in the region, with four lines in a typical daily "dose" (Environmental Health, DOI: 10.1186/1476-069X-4-14).
